Summer Ball - 2008

RUG participates with other Little Leagues in North Seattle to provide recreational summer baseball opportunities for children in the 9-11 age group and in the 12-13 age group. Other leagues include Northeast, Ballard, Richmond, Queen Anne, Magnolia and Northwest.

Summer Ball is meant to take advantage of the good weather that usually arrives after our season is over and to give the kids an opportunity to keep playing so they can try different positions and improve their skills.

Summer Ball is relaxed and emphasizes participation and playing for fun. Everyone plays regardless of skill level. Games are weeknights only starting at 6 pm, no more than twice per week, leaving days open and weekends free. Some games will be at Maple Leaf and the rest will be at the home fields of the other leagues we play. There are no practices. Missing games because of camps, vacations or other commitments is expected. Rosters are intentionally large to allow vacations and other activities.

Summer Ball usually begins after the 4th of July and runs through mid-August. The cost per player is $50.00. Each player will be issued a hat and jersey.

Be sure to download the Medical Release Form fill it out and give it to your coach at your first meeting.

9-11 year olds

RUG usually fields at least 2 teams. The roster will be limited to 16 players per team. Teams played between 10-12 games through mid-August.

Rosters are as balanced as possible. Each team has a good mix of Minors and Majors players. For Minors players moving up it is an opportunity to play with older boys and get a taste of what the next year holds in store. For Majors players it is a chance to keep playing. Players who may be participating in All-Stars can reserve a spot on the team and step in when the All-Star run ends.

Players at this level cannot be older than 11 on April 30. Minors players who are league age 8 may also "play up" in Summer Ball if their skills are advanced enough to enable them to play with older players without being at a severe disadvantage.

12-13 year olds

This Summer Ball program is for 12 year olds who are making the transition to the 90-foot basepaths they will play on in Juniors and for 13 year olds who want to keep playing because they like to play or want the chance to try new positions or just work on their skills.

Players at this level need to be no older than 14 on April 30. 11 year olds who are considering playing up next season in Juniors can also be considered.

E-mail the Summer Ball coordinator if you have any questions about the program. We’ll also be looking for managers, assistant coaches and umpires so if you haven't gotten enough of baseball and can’t quite accept the end of Little League season we would appreciate your help.
